Ford Motor Company Research Engineer – Advanced Polymer Technology in Dearborn, Michigan

The Materials, Process, Structures & Safety team within Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering organization is seeking an employee to work in the Advanced Polymer Technology Department. The department’s focus is on fundamentally understanding the current and future plastics and polymer needs for Ford Motor Company at all levels. The group comprises a multidisciplinary team of researchers in mechanical engineering, material science, physics, and polymer chemistry from PhD level experts to laboratory technicians. This role is focused on development and implementation of polymer technologies to deliver features and performance for vehicles while delivering cost and quality improvements for manufacturing facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform research and develop innovative polymer technologies and applications that enable scalable solutions for cost and weight optimization for IEC, Hybrid, and Battery Electric vehicles

  • Initiate and lead projects to advance technologies from concept to application to implementation readiness

  • Lead a portfolio of projects to pursue and advance Ford’s corporate sustainability and recycling targets

  • Coordinate with technology providers, tier suppliers, and Ford product development, engineering, and manufacturing

  • Design and execute experimental studies to develop and validate technical, scalable, and economically feasible solutions for new polymer technologies

  • Establish processing and design guidelines for new technologies to ensure quality and high volume manufacturing capability

  • Document findings via oral presentations and written reports

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Bachelors degree in chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, polymer chemistry, or related field

  • 5+ years experience in material development with hands-on skills in formulation of some or all of the following: polyurethane foams, thermoplastic blends, filled/reinforced composites

  • 5+ years of laboratory or factory experience with polymer processing, including some or all of the following: polyurethane foam molding, injection molding, blow molding, compression molding, extrusion/pultrusion, laminating, welding

  • 5+ years in material characterization, which may include standard thermal and mechanical testing, melt rheology, and microscopy

  • 6+ months experience with polymer CAE (internships, co-ops and coursework included)

The preferred requirements we seek:

  • Masters and/or Ph.D in chemical engineering, material science, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, polymer chemistry, or related field

  • 8+ years of hands-on material development and polymer processing experience

  • Automotive industry experience, including cross-functional work experience in plastics and polymer processing

  • Experience in polymer multiscale modeling and ICME

  • Experience in EV battery technology

  • Experience in utilizing circular economy principles and life cycle assessment tools

This position is a range of salary grades 6 - 8.
