Ford Motor Company Technical Expert in Dearborn, Michigan

At Ford Motor Company, we believe freedom of movement drives human progress. We also believe in providing you with the freedom to define and realize your dreams! With our incredible plans for the future of mobility, we have a wide variety of opportunities for you to accelerate your career potential as you help us define tomorrow’s transportation.

Ford Electric Vehicles, Digital, & Design (EVD&D) is responsible for developing the key technologies and capabilities – such as EV platforms, batteries, e-motors, inverters, charging and recycling – to create ground-up, breakthrough electric vehicles. By joining the best software, engineering, design and UX talent, you will be a part of creating new technologies and concepts that can be applied across the Ford enterprise. Being on the EVD&D team means building the future as Ford’s center of innovation and growth through electric and connected vehicles and services.

We are seeking an experienced NVH Technical Lead to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in NVH analysis, finite element modeling, and optimization of body structures and full vehicle, with a focus on integrating innovative solutions for next-generation electric vehicles. This role requires a technical expert with extensive experience, capable of leading NVH projects and developing new methodologies to enhance vehicle performance and passenger comfort.

What you’ll be able to do:

  • Perform linear finite element analysis of body structures, trimmed bodies, and full vehicle systems, focusing on vibration and structure-borne acoustic predictions.

  • Optimize lightweight body structures using software tools like Optistruct, Hyperworks, and NASTRAN.

  • Develop and set targets for chassis and body attachment point stiffness methods.

  • Integrate battery packs for structural use as floor pans in next-generation electric vehicles and develop an "NVH Recipe" for this integration.

  • Conduct architecture design, including topology optimization and cross-member location, size, and shape optimization.

  • Design, implement, and code an internal NVH Database using SharePoint, VBA, and MATLAB tools, and implement repositories for various vehicle sensitivity and noise data.

  • Enhance speech recognition robustness to in-vehicle noise by developing scripts to simulate noisy speech environments and determine optimal in-cabin microphone locations using Head Acoustics ACQUA software.

  • Conduct Six-Sigma analysis of vehicle robustness to noise factors using Monte Carlo simulations and simulate various noise factors.

  • Lead the growth of advanced simulation capabilities and incorporate new technologies into the development plan; develop simulation procedures and methodologies for the core engineering group.

  • Collaborate with test and simulation teams to improve design and development efficiency, including AI and Machine Learning; lead and contribute to projects for vehicle attribute analysis.

  • Stay current with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to NVH testing and mitigation techniques; support quick concept development of new and emerging ideas.

  • Participate in post-test teardowns to correlate CAE results to physical tests, develop and implement NVH simulation models, and validate NVH improvements during vehicle prototype builds and evaluations.

  • Collaborate with suppliers to ensure compliance with NVH requirements and specifications; develop prototypes for virtual and physical verification testing.

  • Lead CAE analysis of next-generation products in areas such as Body, Interiors, Closures, Seats, Frames and etc; drive design resolutions using both linear and non-linear CAE analysis.

  • Conduct DOE studies utilizing optimization tools to meet performance requirements, develop CAE-based countermeasures, participate in CAE/design reviews, and maintain records of CAE models.

  • Work in a cross-functional environment to identify and overcome technical challenges, participate in design reviews, and contribute to the vision of engineering excellence.

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering – Structural Dynamics and Vibration (Preferred).

  • Strong engineering mechanics fundamentals.

  • Strong technical skills and expertise in safety and simulation, coupled with a 1st principles approach to problem-solving.

  • 15+ years of experience in NVH analysis and vehicle structure optimization.

  • Proficiency in Optistruct, Hyperworks, NASTRAN, MATLAB, and SharePoint.

  • Experience with Six-Sigma methodologies and Monte Carlo simulations.

  • Strong knowledge of vehicle noise factors and NVH testing methodologies.

  • Highly motivated and creative, capable of performing duties with limited supervision.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work professionally with people at all levels within and outside the organization.

  • Ability to work in a team environment, able to communicate complex technical concepts to non-experts.

  • Experience with AI/ML processes.

  • Experience with NVH test/CAE correlation processes.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse global team with good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • An eagerness to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment where you are part of a high performing team.

  • Ability to thrive in an ambiguous, startup environment in which the team works extremely quick and oftentimes with little direction.

  • Comfortable presenting to executive leadership and clearly articulating significant engineering and material cost efficiencies.
