The Chief Engineer, Design Technical Operations at Ford of China, is pivotal in overseeing and coordinating the technical aspects of the design department. This strategic and tactical position requires strong leadership to a team of technical experts, collaborating effectively with internal and external partners, and ensuring the successful execution of design projects aligned with the Design Vision.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience with strong technical expertise in first principles of design and surface feasibility development. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to successfully drive initiatives to closure.

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction and tactical guidance to the Design team, fostering a culture of innovation, communication, and excellence.

  • Mentor and coach team members to develop their skills and capabilities in line with industry best practices.

  • Work closely across Design, Surface Development, Studio Engineering, and collaboratively with external suppliers and JV partners to align technical operations with overall design and company objectives at a global scale, meeting deliverables on time and with quality.

  • Successfully guide Studio Design programs through the studio appearance, surface feasibility development, and theme approval processes.

  • Oversee the implementation of best practices ensuring compliance with Design standards and industry requirements, whilst also pushing boundaries to enable the Design vision.

  • Stay abreast of technological advancements in design and design feasibility, and provide recommendations for process improvement as part of the global Ford Design team and infrastructure.

  • Lead program management activity to ensure the successful planning and delivery of Design.

  • Lead Studio Design Business Office team. Responsibilities include budget and resourcing, and interaction with external suppliers and JV partners.

Pre-program Specific Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead the alignment of Design inputs, delivering consistency with the Design Vision and proportional requirements.

  • Define and demonstrate the critical engineering parameters needed to enable the Design Vision.

  • Conduct & leverage conceptual vehicle investigations & studies in support of the Design Vision and Design concept and proportion development.

  • Define the future breakthroughs needed to enable design leadership.

  • Ensure suitability of architectures and commonality strategies for Design Vision and Theme development.

  • Support conceptual development of innovative design experiences.

Design Program Responsibilities:

  • Drive the progression, completion, and traceability of Design deliverables into the Product Development system, ensuring delivery on-time delivery with quality.

  • Lead the feasibility and surface progression of Design deliverables from program start to final surface prove-out and release. Integrating partner, attribute, engineering, manufacturing, experiential, digital, overall feasibility, and program requirements into the theme & surface development whilst maintaining the Design Vision.

  • Co-create with partners to identify what could be, can be, and find the aligned win/win solutions that deliver the Design Vision.

  • Create surfaces to drive team alignment around Design Vision, and stakeholder requirements.

  • Define, plan, and support the delivery of Market Research and Design Verification properties.

  • Manage design property & surface planning, status, set-up, & integrity to criteria.

  • Development and feasibility of experiential designs for targeted programs

  • Lead preparation activities to enable Appearance Approval consistent with Ford Design Quality Operating System (QOS) and collaborate with the Design Chief on workflow priority through Design studio to enable success.

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field.

  • Demonstrated 5+ years’ experience in Design studio procedure, surface and Theme feasibility development and delivery.

  • Experience in Design delivery, Body Exterior and Interior Eng., Vehicle Eng., Stamping, Manufacturing, Vehicle Attributes, feasibility, and target setting processes.

  • In depth product knowledge including competitive product offerings, execution, and trends, and intellectual curiosity to anticipate future trends and technological advancements.

  • Open, collaborative, communication and issue resolution style with the demonstrated ability to foster partnerships with key global stakeholders to drive alignment and decision making.

  • Demonstrates strong analytical, conceptual, and strategic thinking abilities (visionary) and delivers with a strategic and enterprise view.
